Starting on Thursday 30th June 2011 we will be meeting in the Training Room at the back of the Queensland Ambulance building in Gordonvale.

Training Room

This new location is approximately 17km south of our previous meeting venue at Forest Gardens.  The Queensland Ambulance Service is on the corner of Cannon and Mill Streets, near the Gordonvale Sugar Mill, next to the Post Office and Police Station.  There is plenty of angle parking opposite the QATB building on Cannon Street.  View the Home page for a map of the street locations.

Please don’t park in the rear car park as this could cause access difficulties for the paramedics.

Thank you to the Queensland Ambulance personnel who have provided this interim arrangement for Mt Sheridan Toastmasters Club while we continue to search for a suitable venue closer to Mt Sheridan and Woree.

Farewell Forest Gardens

Mt Sheridan Toastmasters have been meeting at the Forest Gardens Sales Complex, Forest Gardens, since the Club started in 2005. Thursday 16th June 2011 was our last meeting here, as the property is up for sale. We thank Delfin Lend Least Pty Ltd for the use of this ambient building, with its surrounding lush gardens and great facilities. For those with a sentimental streak, here are some photos.

World Champion of Public Speaking Presenting in Cairns on “Promoting your business through public speaking”

The 2005 Toastmasters International World Champion of Public Speaking, Lance Miller, is coming to Cairns this Friday 17th June to present on the topic “Promoting your business through public speaking”. Lance is an accomplished speaker and has a wealth of knowledge and insight into how to use this tool to your advantage.

Venue: Upstairs at The Pier shopping centre
Cost: $20

Time: 2.45pm to 5.30pm — you are welcome to stay on for dinner (not included in cost) after the event

Champion Lance Miller returns to Cairns

Toastmasters World Champion Speaker 2005, Lance Miller, returns to Cairns on Friday 17th June.  He will be presenting a talk on “Promoting Your Business Through Public Speaking” at the Splash Offices – upstairs at the Pier Complex – from 3pm to 5pm.  Entrance fee is $20.

Lance is an endearing speaker from California with a swag of tips and personal revelations that make his talks entertaining, humorous and rewarding.  His sincerity and natural style is speckled with a wealth of experience.  There will be gems of information to help you develop your speaking style, as well as practical insights about his topic.

Mt Sheridan Toastmasters are disappointed that Lance will not be able to make it to our meeting on Thursday 16th June.  Unfortunately his flight schedule has been changed.  Lance is keen to re-visit our Great Barrier Reef, so we have this unique opportunity to see a Champion in action.  I wonder if he’s mastered speaking underwater yet!

Guess Who’s Coming To My Interview?

Mt Sheridan’s Poetic Toastmaster Celia Berrell went to Sydney earlier this month and gave a Television interview for the Arts & Entertainment programme Joy’s World, broadcast by Sydney’s local television channel TVS.

Many thanks to Agent Pauline Douglas, formerly President of Kickstart Toastmasters, who has recently moved to Sydney.  Pauline did all those things an Agent needs to do.  She set up the appointment, took Celia to the television set, and held her hand (metaphorically) through the whole experience.  She even took some sneak-photos of the occasion.

After the main interview, the Production Manager was keen to film Celia reciting some additional poems for the TV channel.  As the set operators had already left, Agent Pauline stepped in to operate the mixing desk and camera monitors.  Pauline, you are hereby awarded ten housepoints for your versatility and dynamic expertise in the world of media!

Celia will be talking about her experiences in the limelight at Mt Sheridan’s Club Meeting on Thursday 16th June in a speech titled Guess Who’s Coming To My Interview?

Celia was interviewed by Sharon Molloy on ABC Far North radio on Saturday morning 30/4/2011.  The 8 minute segment included Celia’s Science Rhymes poem Beachcombing which is published in the Tropical Writers Anthology Cracks In The Canopy.  A recording of the interview allowed Celia to evaluate her speaking: only one “Umm” but seven “And-err”s were uttered. 

“I knew that I had the “Umms” under control, but without the recording, I wouldn’t have known about the “And-errs”.  I was really pleased that I didn’t feel too nervous or traumatised by the radio interview experience.  Four years of doing Table Topics has definitely helped with that!”

Lance Miller A Winner

Lance Miller’s seminar on Monday 25th April was enjoyable, entertaining and informative.  I was the only representative from the Mt Sheridan Toastmasters Club but there were plenty of people from Kickstart, Cairns City and Marlin Coast Clubs.  Lance spoke about the importance of sincerity in a speech as well as humour and a true affection for your audience.  He told us that it took him nine attempts (years) before achieving his goal of becoming Toastmasters World Champion in 2005.

Evaluation Test Speaker

Michael McGarry provided the Test Speech for the Evaluation Contest at the Northern Division Toastmasters Conference on Saturday 26th April.  He provided an extremely entertaining speech with plenty of humour, to which everyone in the audience could relate.  For Mt Sheridan Club members, we listened with pride as Michael gave a repeat performance of his Ice Breaker (first speech ever) titled “Generation Y” to an audience of over eighty people.  Congratulations Michael!

Conference Helpers

As the host Club for the Northern Division Conference held in Cairns 25th to 27th March, Mt Sheridan Members assisted with various roles and activities during the weekend.  John Lizzio did a great job as Sound Technician, spending most of the event tied to the mixing desk. 

Treasurer Cheryl McLeod helped set up the venue, gave a vote of thanks speech and with Celia Berrell provided Registration support.  Leisel Pisani was Sergeant At Arms for the Table Topics Contest and also gave a vote of thanks speech.
